Yesterday we hired a taxi to drive us around to various silk, ceramic, and silver shops. This sounds extravagant-- he drove us from place to place and waited in the parking lot for us-- but after 4.5 hours we owed him 300 baht ($9.25). We have him a huge tip and he left really happy with 800 baht :) it would have felt cheap not to tip him so well after spending the day buying silk...
That said, we did pay him only $25 total to drive us both around for almost five hours.... Gotta love the low season!
