Ants Nests

There is a type of red ant here that bit the heck out of me last time I was here- I stay a safe distance if possible now.

They live in trees and work together to build nests out of leaves.  Dr Tony said they like mango trees best, since the leaves are long and wrap further around.

Locals love to eat their eggs.  They often mix them with chicken eggs and make a special, delicious omelet.  Unfortunately, there are no eggs to be found during the rainy season, so we haven't tasted them.

They use an bambo stick to poke into the nest and grab the eggs, which they then stick into water- since the ants will angrily fight for their eggs, but not in water.

  1. Very interesting BUT I don't believe I would taste one of the eggs. David got into a bunch of red ants in Florida when he was about 6. They were on grandpa's garden hose and Dave did not know it. These appear to be more aggressive. I can't imagine the bite. Or should I say bites!

    \outl0\strokewidth0 \strokec2 They have a bite that feels like a bee sting! Last time I got many bites- they were pretty bad! One got infected on the flight home- with MRSA... It was rough! I try to stay away now, but I would try the eggs if it was the season... Everybody says they are sweet!}
